U4 STEM Week!
Innovation For The Future
Welcome to STEM week!
It was after the winter break when the Grade 3s began discussing their thoughts and ideas around this year's STEM week theme. They spoke about correcting pollution and litter in order to better the future. Recognizing it as a global issue, they considered litter difficulties that some of them experienced in different countries around the world and thought of the possible reasons why.
This is when the idea of creating recycling bins came about. They wanted to design bins that target all audiences, from children to adults, from those who cannot read to those speaking a different language. Their designs included very cool features as well, such as bin's with noise sensors to play a tune each time something gets recycled, internal self sorting belts, voice controlled robot bin that comes on demand and also bin's that have live wax worms to eat recycled plastic!

We thought of ways to include our school-community, to collaborate and help make it easier for the students and teacher's to recycle better in their classroom's. So the Grade 3s went around and interviewed each homeroom teacher.

Once their answers were in we looked at the data together and the students were motivated to create their designed bin's out of recyclable materials for the different classes.

During this process we also looked at ways we could break down and rebuild plastic materials and paper into new items (recycling). We were very successful when experimenting with paper, so continued experimenting with it to make recycled paper. This process was integral motivation for the students because they were able to see first hand the cool things that can be made with recycled goods, and it was a lot easier than we expected.

Building their projects really put their math, artistic and engineering skills to the test, you should see the educational game that was made and also the peddle bin!

After an awesome week of good work, it was time to display our fantastic bins, poster and games down stairs for all to enjoy.

We also got to enjoy two talks in the MPR by Mrs Yaldiz about Solar Panels and Mr Barles about Electricity and Nuclear Power.

A big WELL DONE to all DSKI students for their unbelievable innovative ideas, our future is already looking that much brighter!

With great excitement comes great exhaustion! At the end of it we showed one another appreciation and some kindness by creating a massage train.

Thank you to our parents who came to enjoy STEM and Open Day with us, we love having you with us!
